Although chemical control of mosquitoes seems to be effective quickly, its effects are short-lived.  Trying to control mosquitoes by chemical methods only, is quite wrong.  Countries that have succeeded in controlling mosquitoes have achieved success through the application of biological and chemical methods.  Therefore, the research team of Chittagong University (CU) has recommended following biological methods, not just relying on chemicals, to protect from mosquitoes.

The research report produced by CU was handed over to Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury on Tuesday.

Dr Rabiul Hasan Bhuiyan, Proctor and Associate Professor of the Department of Biochemistry, Dr Tapashi Ghosh Roy, Professor of the Department of Chemistry, Dr Shahidul Islam, Assistant Professor of the Department of Geography and Ecology, Dr HM Abdullah Al Masud, Assistant Professor of the Department of Microbiology, Mohammad Abdul Wahed Chowdhury, Assistant Professor of the Department of Zoology and Dr Mohammad Omar Faruq, Associate Professor of the Department of Botany conducted the research.

“We were given five types of mosquito repellents by the city corporation,” the researchers said.  “We tested it and got 100% success in a chemical.  The use of kerosene with herbal products is destroying 100% of the larvae.  Although the larvae are destroyed by the other four types of chemicals, the mortality rate of mosquitoes is low”, they added.

The researchers said that although there was a lot of garbage and water in a pond in the city for a long time, we did not find any larvae in it.  Later I found out that there are some fish in the pond that are capable of destroying larvae.  City corporations may regularly release these fish into the closed waters of the city each year. If the mosquitoes lay eggs in these waters in this way, the native fish will eat the larvae and will contribute a lot in controlling the mosquitoes.
