Court orders to freeze ex-MP Awal’s bank accounts

A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to freeze 18 bank accounts and seize documents of 40 scheduled immovable properties of a former parliamentarian, AKMA Awal and his wife Laila Parvin in two graft cases.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Senior Special Judge Court of Dhaka passed the order.

Earlier Md Ali Akbar, deputy director of ACC and also the investigation officer of the cases, submitted two separate petitions.

 ACC filed two separate cases against the then lawmaker of Awami League Awal and his wife with its Integrated District Office-1 of Dhaka. Awal was sued for amassing Tk 33 crore illegally while Laila was sued for acquiring Tk 10.98 crore illegally on September 29 in 2020.

Awal in his wealth statement submitted to ACC concealed information of Tk 15 crore 72 lakh while his wife Parvin also made Tk 10.98 crore illegally which are both punishable offence according to ACC Act 2004 and Money Laundering Prevention Act 2012.

Following the cases, the couple got four weeks' anticipatory bail from the High Court on October 5 after their surrender.

 ACC filed three cases against Awal and one against his wife for occupying a portion of government land behind the land office in Pirojpur Sadar Upazila and building a two-storied building on it on December 30 in 2019.
