The crackdown on casinos being illegally operated in the city is highly appreciated. We wholly support the decision of the government to finally root out the top elements in the drug and casino businesses around the capital. Reports published in this daily say that there have been a number of clubs and casinos which have been raided by RAB members and over two hundred people have been arrested so far including major Jubo League leaders who have been running these establishments illegally.

It is astonishing to note that there are nearly 60 such casino gambling dens in the capital. As per the present government high command’s drastic order, nobody, either in the ruling Awami League or any other orgnsiation, will be spared if found involved in any offensive activities in order to build a peaceful society, where there would be no envy and hatred among the people of any faith. As per this ‘zero tolerance’ policy against the corrupt, extortionists, tender manipulators, drug peddlers and criminals, these actions should not remain confined to the capital only, rather be spread throughout the country. Since the picture of the capital is like this then there is no doubt that there are numerous more such gambling dens spread across the country.

The PM has heavily criticised these leaders and have asked the law enforcement agencies to clamp down on these casinos and arrest those responsible for it. This is definitely a positive move on the government’s part and seems to be a part of a new plan to root out criminal elements from the ruling party affiliates.

The authorities concerned should ensure that this crackdown continues on a countrywide scale and all the illegal gambling dens are rooted out. As these have been going on for quite some time this means that the people who run these organisations have a blatant disregard for the law. These organisations, especially the ruling party politicians who are patrons of these establishments should be brought under the law to ensure that such situations don’t arise in future.
