Bangladesh’s total tree coverage will reach 25 percent before 2030 from the existing 22 percent as the government is determined to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said.

“Climate change will be a major problem in the future. Its costs nearly $1 trillion annually, which we need to reduce and the media should highlight the issue,” he said on Monday.

The minister made the remarks after planting a pomelo sapling on the Parliament Complex premises as part of the 10 million tree saplings announced by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, said a press release.

Momen said Bangladesh has been elected as the President of Climate Vulnerable Forum this year while the next COP-27 will be held in Scotland.  Six people have been made Climate Vulnerability Ambassadors with Saima Wazed Hossain representing Bangladesh, he added. Dhaka-10 constituency lawmaker Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin was present on the occasion
