Coronavirus cases cross 55,000 in Bangladesh

Bangladesh on Wednesday confirmed 2,695 new cases of coronavirus and 37 more deaths overnight, taking the number of total cases to 55,140 and deaths 746.

Additional Director General for Health Prof Nasima Sultana said at the daily bulletin that they had tested 12,510 samples in the last 24 hours till 8am of Wednesday.

Of the total dead patients, she said 28 were male and nine female – 31 died at hospitals, five at home and the other person was diagnosed after death.

She, however, the body of those who will die from Covid-19 infection can be buried or burnt, according to one’s own religious rituals, in family graveyard.

“No need to select any different cemetery, if any person dies of Covid-19 infection,” she said, citing World Health Organization that there is no evidence that Covid-19 spreads from the corpse.

Bangladesh first reported the virus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18. The World Health Organisation declared the virus pandemic on March 11.

Dhaka, Narayanganj and Chattogram are the hotspots of the virus.
Of the new dead patients, 19 are from Dhaka, 13 from Chattogram, two from Rangpur and one each from Khulna and Sylhet, Prof Nasima said.

In the last 24 hours, 470 patients were released from hospitals, increasing the tally of cured patients to 11,590.
According to the latest data, 21.02 percent of coronavirus infected patients have recovered in Bangladesh and 1.35 percent died.
However, the infection rate was 21.54 percent on Wednesday.
