Coordinated efforts must to ensure food safety

As food adulteration has become serious public health concerns, it is time for a coordinated efforts to fight back against such crime. Experts believe that it is very important to give attention to food safety now as the country has already achieve food sufficiency. They said that the challenge is to reduce crimes related to food contamination.

The experts pointed out that the country lacks proper regulations to check such crimes concerning food safety. Public health issue is often least bothered as adulterated food is commonly available in the markets, the experts said. The experts made these remarkets while speaking at a seminar titled, “Food for All: Challenges and Tasks,” jointly organized by Bangladesh Super Market Owners Association and Bangladesh Food Safety Authority on Wednesday in the city.
Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) Director General Md Muazzem Hossain said, “Food is our basic right. Hence, it is quite obvious that we should check to ensure food safety. But the main obstacle against ensuring food safety is the lack of awareness among common people and producers’ tendency to unethically making profit.”

Urging the businessmen to avoid blaming each other, he said, “We need to work together to ensure food safety for all. We have to keep in mind that it is everyone’s problem so it is time that we put out brains together find best possible solution.” Former agriculture secretary Anwar Farukh said, the government should check for food safety at the production level or in other words, check for food safety while the produces are on the field. “We must ensure strict monitoring for pure food and to execute such monitoring we must also strengthen the concerned institutions,” Farukh added. We need to solve environmental problems to store our products, develop the infrastructure and transportation system and marketing system.
