Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmood today said the conviction rate in graft cases has increased to 70 percent, which is higher than any time in the past, reports BSS.
“If the investigations in graft cases could not be conducted properly and the accused could not be proved guilty, courts cannot convict the accused,” he said while addressing the inaugural session of a training programme at Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) media centre here.
DMP’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit and the ACC have jointly arranged the seven-day training programme for the officials of the national anti-graft agency.
Speaking as the chief guest, the ACC chief said the lack of capacity and manpower shortage are the main problems of the commission and that is why it has opened a training wing to increase the capability of the ACC officials. Knowledge is essential for all and training helps people increase their capacity, he said, adding “So, you must be updated in the era of information and technology”.
Urging the newly recruited officials of the ACC to work sincerely, Mahmood said “Do not fear criticism…but you must overcome criticism through your good works”.It is quite impossible to eliminate corruption fully from a country but it should be controlled, he added. DMP commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam and CTTC Unit chief and additional commissioner Moniruzzaman, among others, spoke on the occasion.
