Although the duration of the winter season in Bangladesh is relatively short, every year the season inflicts immense sufferings on people especially the poor, elderly and children. As reported by this daily on Tuesday, the number of patients with flu, fever and cold-related diseases is increasing amid the bone-chilling cold in winter. Most of the patients are children as they have less immunity and tolerance level than adults.

Children are suffering mostly from acute respiratory infections, pneumonia, bronchiolitis and diarrhea while the elderly are coming to hospitals with asthma, bronchitis, acute respiratory infections and other ailments caused by cold. Reportedly, at least 100 to 150 patients come to the outdoor department of Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital every day. It was learnt that the number of pediatric patients at the hospital has doubled since the onset of winter.

Immediate measures should be devised to deploy and

operate temporary and seasonal medical teams to work

in remote areas where people cannot avail medicare

Experts are of the opinion children can be infected with germs very easily in winter. Dry weather in winter increases the amount of germs in the air. Due to this, children are getting more infected with viral diseases. If the temperature falls further, the situation will worsen. Considering the situation, we suggest all parents to take special care of their children.

People in remote areas of the country do not have adequate healthcare facilities. Taking this into consideration, relevant authorities should devise immediate measures to deploy and operate temporary and seasonal medical teams to work in remote areas where people cannot avail medicare. Also, the media should play an important role in preparing people for facing cold-related diseases by telecasting health care programmes.
