In the midst of the pandemic when businesses globally are suffering from huge losses, the government has taken measures to reopen the closed jute mills under Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) in different parts of the country.

Government wants to encourage both domestic and foreign entrepreneurs who will get the opportunity to take lease. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) will also be considered a priority.

Since the last few months the jute industry has taken a positive turn. The demand of jute and jute products have increased in developed countries that include Europe and America.

This initiative will bring

the unemployed workers

back to work

This will propel an increase in export income from jute and jute products as the price of them has significantly increased in the global market.

Not only in export, measures should also be taken to increase the demand of jute products in the local market. Therefore, the decision to reopen mills will certainly help to boost the country’s economy further.

This initiative will bring the unemployed workers back to work and also increase production, resulting in an increase in peoples’ livelihood and socio economic condition.

Before reopening, the arrears of the workers should also be taken into consideration, as of now workers of only 4 out of 25 mills have been paid. So the government should clear all the remaining dues of the workers as soon as possible.

Prioritization should also be given in employing high skill workers and renovating existing mills. Therefore, before reopening these mills and handing them over to private leasing, some issues are there that the government needs to solve if they want to revive this sector in a sustainable way.
