We are happy to note that Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has launched a combing operation in the city to control dengue. They have divided each ward into 10 blocks and then each block has been split into 10 sub-blocks. The operation will continue every day until dengue is brought under control. Undoubtedly this is a welcome initiative in the city as many continue to get infected with dengue.

City dwellers have been urged to join the cleanliness campaign and keep their houses and surroundings clean. Government, private and commercial establishments must also do their part in eliminating breeding grounds of Aedes mosquito.

Inspection teams have been assigned that visit houses in each area during the combing operation. If Aedes larvae is found in any house or building, a notice will be put up outside as a warning measure. The team will then return after 10 days and if the situation remains the same, the owners will be fined.

Both Dhaka North and South City Corporations

are working hard to bring an end to the

dengue crisis which has gripped the city

It will not be possible to eliminate the source of Aedes mosquitoes just through government and city corporation initiatives. Community-based organizations and volunteers, as well as individual residents must be vigilant in identifying and destroying any open sources of water in containers.

In order to rein in the dengue outbreak, further steps need to be taken by the government. Construction sites and open bodies of water need to be monitored by special teams.

Both Dhaka North and South City Corporations are working hard to bring an end to the dengue crisis which has gripped the city. Despite their best efforts, it seems that more new cases are being identified each day.

Dhaka residents must take responsibility of their own homes and surroundings if the situation is to be brought under control. Simply relying on authorities and ignoring our civic duties will not help fight the menace.
