China urged to play stronger role in Rohingya crisis

Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday urged China to play a stronger role in resolving Rohingya crisis as humanitarian problem, reports BSS.

“China has to play a significant role to ensure safe and peaceful repatriation of Rohingya citizens to their homeland,” she said this, while Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Li Jiming paid a courtesy call on her at her JS office. During the meeting, they also discussed about bilateral issues as well as trade and investment in Bangladesh.

The Speaker also highlighted Bangladesh’s tremendous development under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Referring to friendly relations with China, she said bilateral relations between Bangladesh and China will be further strengthened in the future. Dr Shirin said China is one of the development partners of Bangladesh. She appraised China’s role in Bangladesh’s infrastructure development and trade.

During the call on, she requested Chaises envoy to continue cooperation and provide support. The Speaker said Padma Bridge is being built with technical support of Chinese, adding, “Padma Bridge will launch a new horizon of socio-economic development of Bangladesh, which will connect southern part of the country with the capital.”

Recalling her China visit, she said Speaker of the National People’s Congress of China gave her a warm reception in Beijing. Terming the visit s a fruitful, she said China is very sincere in Bangladesh’s development. The exchange of visits within two country’s parliamentarians will add a new dimension in the future.

Ambassador Li Jiming called Bangladesh as China’s one of the most important friendly countries, and said cooperation between the two neighbouring countries would continue on mutual interest. Increasing regional connectivity will bring economic prosperity to all the countries of the region. At the same time, he said that China’s role in the peaceful return of the Rohingya would be further strengthened. Officials of the China Embassy and senior officials of the Parliament Secretariat were present.
