Like every year, Joynagar Boardghar Officemore Bazaar at Salimpur union in Ishwardi upazila in Pabna is buzzing with the smell of jackfruits this year also. Both wholesale and retail traders are flocking to the market to buy the fruit.
Wholesale traders from Barisal, Bhola, Jashore, Khulna, Sylhet, Chhatak, Patuakhali, Chilahati are crowding the bazaar from morning till midnight. The jackfruits are loaded on trucks at dawn and sent to these areas.
Ishwardi jackfruits are renowned all over the country. Joynagar Boardghar Officemore bazaar is the biggest wholesale market of the fruit in the upazila. The market becomes open day and night for two months straight.
The bazaar has been in operation for the last twelve years. According to syndicate traders, 12 to 15 thousand jackfruits are sold in the market every day.
Joynagar syndicate trader Milon Mahmud said that this year’s jackfruit production is better than last years. A huge amount of jackfruits are being brought in each day. The fruits are being sold at reasonable prices. The different varities are being sold at a range of Tk 30 to Tk 120.
Badshah Miah, a businessman from Sylhet, said that the jackfruits being sold here are well structured and very delicious. Thanks to easy of transport and reasonable prices, its very profiatble to buy the fruits from Joynagar and sellign it in Sylhet. He added that the market will be open for one more month.
Upazila Agricultural officer Abdul Latif said that jackfruit is produced in 129 hectares of land in the upazila. Ishwardi produces 5,805 metric ton jackfruit. He also said that the jackfruit from this area tastes better compared to varities from the rest of the country.
