Boro paddy procurement target in this current season has been achieved in Magura. Magura district food office sources informed that they started Boro paddy procurement drive in the district from April 25. The procurement target was 3260 MT.

The target of procurement is 1678 MT in Magura sadar upazila while 1126 MT in Shalikha, 154 MT in Sreepur and 302 MT in Mohammadpur upazila.

In the meantime procurement target has been achieved in all Upazilas. The procurement rate was taka 26 per kg. The dead line for procurement was initially set August 31. As the procurement drive was facing problems in different districts, government extended the dead line which is September 15.

Golam Hossen a farmer of village Belnagar under Magura sadar upazila told, existing rate of Boro paddy in the local market is Tk 16 to 17 per kg . But we have sold our rice under the procurement at taka 26 per kg. So paddy procurement by government has come as a boon for us.

Shafiqur Rahman executive director of Palli Prokriti (an NGO) told, if the government procures paddy directly from farmers, the farmers become benefited being free from the exploitation of middlemen. However if government extends paddy procurement target and ensures supply directly by farmers it will bring a positive impact on our agriculture.

When contacted Magura district food controller Sheikh Moinul Islam, he said, “We have become successful in achieving Boro paddy procurement target in the district. At the same time we have ensured farmers’ right in the procurement drive.”
