Efforts are currently underway to enact the Land Crime Prevention and Redress Act, a significant legislative development aimed at addressing issues in the land sector and providing relief to the people.

The draft law is currently undergoing scrutiny and is expected to be sent to Parliament in the near future.

Speaking at a public awareness meeting on land, organized jointly by the Chattogram Divisional Commissioner’s Office and the Chattogram District Administration, Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury emphasized the importance of the proposed law.

The meeting, held at the Chattogram Gymnasium Hall on Saturday, marked the occasion of Land Service Week 2023. If the act is enacted, the Land Crime Prevention and Redress Act is anticipated to alleviate a substantial amount of suffering experienced by individuals affected by land-related issues.  The legislation aims to establish mechanisms to prevent land crimes and provide channels for redress, thereby fostering a cleaner and more transparent land sector, said the land minister.

By subjecting the draft law to meticulous scrutiny, the government demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the effectiveness and legality of the proposed legislation. The comprehensive review process will help address any potential shortcomings and refine the provisions to ensure the intended impact on society, sources said.

The Land Crime Prevention and Redress Act holds the potential to transform the land sector, fostering fairness, accountability, and efficiency. It is expected to enhance public trust in land-related transactions and promote sustainable development. The enactment of this law will not only benefit individuals but also contribute to the overall progress of the nation.

The land minister also stated that his ministry is a 100 percent successful user of Digital Bangladesh, as announced by the Prime Minister, in providing services to the people. Almost all of our core services have been sustainably digitized. With the implementation of the 100 percent cashless land development tax system effective from April 14, the government has collected TK 350 crore in revenue in the last 43 days, and we anticipate an annual revenue of TK 2,000 crore.

At the same time, in light of the growing number of complaints regarding the plight of bona fide landowners affected by the ongoing land acquisition, the land minister has directed the concerned officials to promptly address this issue.
