Begum Rokeya Day observed

Begum Rokeya Day observed in Nabinagar in Brahmanbaria on Wednesday on the occasion of the 140th birth and 88th death anniversary of Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain, the pioneer of women’s rights in the Indian subcontinent.

Marking the day, a discussion meeting and prize giving ceremony was held at the Nabinagar Upazila Parishad Auditorium.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Nabinagar Ekramul Siddique presided over the function , while Chairman of Nabinagar Upazila Parishad Md Monirujjaman Monir was present as the chief guest. 

It was attended, among others, by member of Zila Parishad Nurunnahar Begum, Vice Chairman of Nabinagar Upazila Parishad Sheuli Rahman, senior fisheries officer Abu Masud and women affairs officer Jesmin-ara-Begum. At the event six women were given ‘Joyeeta Award’ for their success in various fields.  Speakers at the discussion said that Begum Rokeya played a vital role for development and empowerment of the women. All of us should take lessons from the life and work of Begum Rokeya.

The speakers called upon the women to come forward for development in various sectors. The country’s overall development won’t be possible without active participation of the women.
