Bangladesh reiterates her firm adherence to ‘One-China’ policy and urges the parties concerned to resolve their differences in accordance with the UN Charter and through dialogue.

The foreign ministry issued the statement amid tension between Beijing and Washington following the visit of Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan on August 2, despite China’s strong opposition.

Beijing called the visit “a serious violation of the one-China principle” and that “it infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, sends a wrong signal to the separatist forces for “Taiwan independence”, and has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-U.S. relations.”

“China firmly opposes and sternly condemns this," Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Li Jiming said in a statement, adding that: "We believe that the government and people of Bangladesh will continue to abide by the one-China principle, understand and support China’s legitimate and justified position on Taiwan question, and work together with China to defend regional peace, stability and prosperity.”

The foreign ministry in a statement said “Bangladesh is closely following the developments in the Taiwan Strait and urges all parties concerned to exercise utmost restraint and refrain from any actions that may aggravate tensions and undermine peace and stability in the region and beyond.”

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md Shahriar Alam also talked to the media and reiterated the government's ‘One-China’ policy.

"It's nothing new. Bangladesh always believes in One-China policy. We do not want any new tension in this regional or at the international level. The world is facing many crises at the moment. We don't want a new issue added to it,” he said, calling upon all to follow the UN charter to avoid conflicts.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is due to visit Bangladesh on August 6 and August 7.
