Bangladesh has further strengthened its position as the global leader in safe and green ready-made garment (RMG) factory units with two more units recognized as ‘green factory’.

The country’s green factory stood at 180 with more two factories gaining US Green Building Council's (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (Leed) certificates.

Bangladesh is at the top position in the world in terms of recognition of environmentally friendly green factories.

The two new factories which got 'green factory' certificates are Victoria Intimates Limited (gold rating) and Dresden Textiles Limited (gold rating).

MohiuddinRubel, director of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said, “This year we have had 13 platinum certified factories. Besides a total; of 28 companies (Gold, Silver and Platinum) have got green factory certificates. More than 550 more factories are waiting to enter the list of green certified factories.”

Among the two newly certified companies, Gold Lead Certified Green Garments of Bangladesh, Victoria Intimates Limited started its journey in 2019. The institute, located at Sreepur in Gazipur, got the certificate on December 12 with 62 points.

And Dresden Textiles Limited is located in Trishal, Mymensingh. This institution got Gold Certified on 13 December by getting 68 points.

Earlier in November, the two new factories which got 'green factory' certificates are Bornali Collections Ltd at Hazaribagh in Narayanganj (gold rating) and Bangladesh Export Import Company Limited at Beximco Industrial Park in Gazipur (platinum rating).

Bangladesh currently leads the world in terms of green signal in garment factories. There are now 58 factories with platinum rating, 108 factories with gold rating, and 10 factories with silver rating. However, four factories did not get any rating, but received certificates.

Mohiuddin said said, “Recognition of 13 companies as platinum green factories in one year is a big achievement for us. Such recognition boosts our morale when orders for Bangladeshi garments in the global market are dwindling amid the economic downturn.”

We have been doing everything to build a safe and environmentally friendly sustainable factory for a long time,” he said, adding that the confidence of buyers in Bangladesh is increasing and they are also cooperating with us.
