Bangladesh Covid-19 cases cross 50,000-mark

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases has crossed 50,000-mark and deaths 700 in Bangladesh.
The health department on Tuesday confirmed 2,911 new cases, highest single-day rise so far, and 37 deaths in the last 24 hours till 8am.

Additional Director General for Health Prof Nasima Sultana updated the nation with the latest figure at the daily virtual bulletin at 2.30pm.

She said the total number of cases now surged to 52,445 and deaths 709.
During the period, 523 patients have been released from hospital, taking the total number of recoveries to 11,120.
She said they had tested 12,704 samples in 24 hours in 52 labs across Bangladesh.

The World Health Organisation declared the virus pandemic on March 11.
Bangladesh reported the first three cases on March 8 and first death March 18.

Among the new dead patients, 33 are male and four are female. 28 patients died at hospitals and nine at their homes.
Ten of them are from Dhaka division, 15 from Chattogram, four from Sylhet, three from Barishal, two each from Rajshahi and Rangpur and one from Mymensingh.

According to the latest data, 21 percent coronavirus infected patients have recovered and 1.35 percent died.
The infection rate was 22.91 percent on Tuesday.

Currently, 58,545 people are quarantined across Bangladesh – including 2,506 newly-quarantined individuals.
A total of 231,840 people have completed their quarantine course.

The authorities placed 388 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation, bringing the total to 6,040 after 3,407 left.

Prof Nasima said they have the capacity to accommodate 13,284 people at different isolation wards and 31,991 people at 626 institutional quarantine facilities.

She asked people to wear masks to protect themselves from infections and mentioned that scientifically cloth-made mask is equally effective to prevent the virus.

“We can reuse cloth-made masks after washing by detergents or soaps.”
Dhaka, Narayanganj and Chattogram remained the COVID-19 hotspots.
The virus has killed 377,797 people globally and infected 6,384,205 so far.
