Attention on nutrition security stressed

With the security of food production already improved and ensured it is now time to pay attention to the security of nutrition.

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder made the call at a Media Sanitation Workshop on Participation of Bangladesh in the UN System Summit at the Press Information Department's conference room on Sunday.

Speaking as the chief guest, the minister said after 1975, people had to survive by eating rice once a day. However, the people of that Bangladesh do not go without food now. All has been improved in food production and now it is time to focus on nutrition security.

Urging to raise awareness among the people about nutrition, the food minister said “If awareness is not created among the people, we will lag behind. If we want to build a sustainable and prosperous Bangladesh, we have to create awareness among all of us. In this case, the media workers can play a leading role.”

The minister said all kinds of activities including food management and price control of the country are being completed in 18 ministries.

Speaking on the occasion, Food Secretary, Dr Moshammat Nazmanara Khanum, said, "We are working on various aspects including food awareness management among all. We are also emphasizing on the protection of biodiversity and production management to be healthy.”

He added that many of do not know the rules of food consumption. Again, many people do not accept it knowingly. Awareness needs to be raised for these issues.

It was informed at the event that the UN Secretary General has convened the Food Systems Summit on September 23 in collaboration with Rome-based organizations to determine the various levels of system transformation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

by 2030.

The speakers said Bangladesh has made unprecedented improvements in food and nutrition security in recent times. The country has achieved self-sufficiency in rice production. Production of fish-meat, fruits and vegetables has increased rapidly. The underweight index for 5-year-olds has halved since the mid-90s.
