A case has been filed against Zakaria Noman Foyezi, the former publicity secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam’s recently dissolved committee, on charges of rape at the Hathazari police station in Chattogram.

A woman filed the case with the Hathazari police station on Thursday night.

Chattogram District Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Afzarul Haque Tutul said the case has been filed under Section 9 (1) of the Women and Child Abuse Suppression Act 2000 (Amendment 2003).

According to police sources, Zakaria Noman Foyezi met a woman through Facebook in September 2019. With time Zakaria developed illicit relations with the woman, often fulfilling his sexual desires with her in different houses of Hathazari and Chattogram metropolitan areas.

Before such sexual encounters Zakaria convinced the woman that he would marry her. At one stage realizing Zakaria’s ill motives, the woman filed a rape case with the Hathazari Model Police Station on Thursday night.

Earlier on Wednesday (May 5), Chattogram District Police arrested Zakaria from Chakaria of Coxs Bazar. After the arrest, Superintendent of Police SM Rashidul Haque told a news conference on Thursday that Zakaria had an extramarital affair with the woman.

Zakaria is the second central leader of Hefazat-e-Islami, a Qaumi madrassa-based organization, who has been charged with rape.

Earlier, Mamunul Haque Assistant Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islami, another central leader of the organization, was accused in a rape case in Narayanganj filed by Jharna Begum, whom Mamunul Haque had identified as his second wife.

Police say Mamunul Haque and Zakaria were involved in violence across the country on the golden jubilee of independence.
