Prof Dr Nazim Ahmad, Dean of Veterinary Science Faculty of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), has said, ‘The health status of a country’s people is known from the health status of its livestock population. If any country fails to produce healthy livestock, people of the country will suffer for ill health. Livestock is the most important source of protein which plays vital role to build an intelligent nation.’

He said these while speaking as the chief guest at a daylong training programme titled ‘Dairy Farming and Health Management’ held at Microbiology and Hygiene Department Gallery of BAU on Saturday. The training programme was organised by Department of Microbiology and Hygiene with the support of Krishi Gobeshona Foundation (KGF).

Prof Dr Nazim Ahmad said that dairy cattle are mostly affected with various zoonotic diseases like Tuberculosis, Brucellosis, Anthrax, and Campylobacteriosis. Farmers are at risk of zoonotic diseases during care taking of the dairy cattle and farm activities. To minimize such kind of zoonotic diseases, mass awareness should be created among farmers. Besides proper biosecurity must be maintained in farm level in order to produce safe animal protein, he added.

District Livestock Officer (DLO) Dr Sheikh Shahinul Islam addressed the event as special guest. Principal Investigator (PI) cum coordinator of the project Prof Dr SM Lutful Kabir presided over the program while research assistant Md Arif moderated it. A total of 25 dairy farmers of Mymensingh district participated in the training programme.
