Amit Shaha, Toha placed on five-day remand

Two more students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) were placed on a five-day remand each in connection with the murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad. The two accused, both belonged to the university’s BCL unit, are: Amit Saha, a student of 16th batch of BUET’s civil engineering department and Hossain Mohammad Toha, a 17 batch student of mechanical engineering department.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sarafuzzaman Ansari granted the remand. Earlier in the morning, DB Inspector Wahiduzzaman, also the investigation officer of the case, produced the duo before the court seeking a 10-day remand prayer. Earlier on Thursday, Detective Branch of police arrested Amit from Sabujbagh of Dhaka and Toha from Mawna of Gazipur in connection with the murder.

Abrar Fahad, a second year student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of BUET was allegedly beaten to death in Sher-e-Bangla Hall on October 6. The body of Fahad was found lying on the staircase between the first and second floors of the Hall. Police, so far, have arrested 17 students of BUET out of total 19 accused over their alleged involvement in the killing of fellow student Abrar Fahad.

Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a case against 19 people with Chawkbazar Police Station in connection with the Abrar murder on Monday last. Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested another accused in BUET student Abrar Fahad murder case from Shah Kiron area in Sylhet in the early hours of today.

The arrestee Md Majedul Islam is a 17th batch student of the Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MME) Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Deputy Commissioner of DMP Masudur Rahman told BSS that a Dhanmondi zonal team of DB (South) of DMP conducted a drive in Shah Kiron area in Sylhet and arrested Majedul at around 4am.

He said Majedul’s name was mentioned in the murder case. The number of arrestees stood at 17 in the Abrar Fahad murder case with the arrest of Majedul. Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of Electric and Electronics Engineering (EEE) Department of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was beaten to death in a dormitory on Sunday.

Police recovered his body from between the ground floor and the second floor of the Sher-e-Bangla Hall of BUET at 3am on Monday. Abrar’s father Barkat Ullah filed a case against 19 people with Chawkbazar Police Station in connection with the Abrar murder on Monday last.
