The ruling Awami League said it has decided to take tougher action against its party leaders and activists who violate the decisions and instructions of the high command of the party centring the local elections across the country.

Besides, the party is also going to take punitive measures against the wrongdoers and opportunists in the party. The intruders into the Awami League will be excluded soon, party sources said.

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, also the Minister for Road, Transport and Bridges, on Tuesday said the party would not compromise with the rebel candidates in the ongoing elections to different municipalities.

He urged the party leaders not to create divisions and conflicts in the party and not to get involved in any indiscipline.

The party general secretary also warned as saying that the rebel candidates will have to suffer bad consequences if they do not follow the party discipline.

Obaidul Quader came up with the remarks while speaking at the first general meeting of the sub-committee on Liberation War at the party's central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in capital Dhaka on Tuesday morning.

Talking to the partymen, Obaidul Quader urged the revel candidates not to create any anti-disciplinary activities. He took part in the meeting through a video conference from his government residence.

The Awami League general secretary also urged the rebel candidates to withdraw their candidature in the third and fourth phases of the elections to municipal polls across the country.

Besides, he advised the rebels to work for the candidates nominated by the party as well as in favour of the party’s electoral symbol ‘Boat’.

“All leaders and workers of Awami League have to work in favour of Boat forgetting all the conflicts and misunderstanding. The rebel candidates would not be spared anymore,” he said.

It should be mentioned that the ruling party is firm on its decision to take actions against its partymen who would violate the party decision.

As part of the decision, the party has also launched cleansing drives to exclude criminals, rebels, corrupts and intruders from Awami League and its different associate bodies. In the meantime, many of the leaders have been kicked out from Awami League, Jubo League, Chhatra League, Swechchhasebok League and other associate organisations for their involvement in wrongdoings and various other illegal acts.

Besides, new leaderships have been selected keeping many other leaders aside.
