AL candidates win landslide victory in CTBA election

Awami League (AL) backed Chattogram Sommilito Taxes Ainjibi Somonnoy Parishad candidate Alhaj Mohammad Nur Hossain and Alhaj Mohammad Feroz Iftekhar have been elected president and general secretary (GS) respectively in the election of  The Chattogram Taxes Bar Association (CTBA).

The CTBA Chief Election Commissioner Advocate Md Abdul Bari announced the results on Sunday night after counting all the votes.

Advocate Bari announced that ‘Chattogram Sommilito Taxes Ainjibi Somonnoy Parished has won 10 posts including the post of president and GS. The Pro-BNP-Jamaat backed Chattogram Taxes Ainjibi Oikya Parishad own six posts including vice-president and joint secretary and rest one post won by left-leaning Sommilito Parishad.

A total of 2214 eligible voters out of 2,977 cast their votes in the election. The Awami League-backed president candidate Nur Hossain got 1,378 votes, while his nearest rival BNP-backed president candidate Md Abu Taher secured 825 votes.

Alhaj Mohammad Feroz Iftekhar, a Chattogram Sommilito Taxes Ainjibi Somonnoy Parishad GS candidate won the election defeating BNP-backed candidate Bakaullah Chowdhury Iran by 229 votes.

Voting began at the CTBA auditorium at 8.30 am on Sunday and it continued till 4:30pm without any break, the sources said.

Awami League-backed Chattogram Sommilito Taxes Ainjibi Somonnoy Parishad, progressive and left-leaning parties backed Sommilito Parishad and Pro-BNP-Jamaat backed Chattogram Taxes Ainjibi Oikya Parishad were vying for 17 posts in the election this year.

CTBA sources said, a total of 45 candidates were vying for the posts of 17 office-bearers, including nine executive committee members.
