AL announces 32 names of its central committee, 9 ministers dropped

The ruling Bangladesh Awami League has announced names of 32 more leaders of its full-fledged central committee while names of at least nine ministers have been dropped from the central working committee.

Party General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Thursday night at a press conference at the party president’s Dhanmondi political office in the capital announced the names of those 32 leaders, who were elected by the party’s highest decision-making body. He made the announcement after a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the President of Bangladesh Awami League.

At the press conference Obaidul Quader said, “I am announcing names of the leaders of the committee as per the directives from the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s daughter Prime Minister and our President Sheikh Hasina”. However, seven posts of the 81-member committee still remain vacant. They are an organising secretary, religious affairs secretary, industries and commerce secretary, treasurer and three executive members.

In this regard, Obaidul Quader said, “Names for the posts of one more organising secretary, treasurer, industries and commerce affairs secretary and religious affairs secretary and three more members would be announced later.” Earlier on December 21, the second day of party’s 21st council, the party elected 42 office-bearers of the central working committee.

At the council, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was re-elected as the party president for the ninth consecutive term and Obaidul Quader as the general secretary for a second straight term. They were elected unopposed.

Those seven ministers, whose names have been excluded from the central committee, are Housing and Public Works Minister SM Rezaul Karim (former legal affairs secretary), Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi (former finance secretary), State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury (former organising secretary), Deputy Minister for Water Resources AKM Enamul Haque Shamim (former organising secretary), Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury (former organising secretary), State Minister for Religious Affairs Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah (former religious affairs secretary) and State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatun Nessa Indira (former women affairs secretary), Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun (former central working committee member) and State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian (former central working committee member).

Besides, names of Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton (former central working committee member) and Gazipur Zilla Parishad chairman (former central working committee member) have also been dropped from the new committee.

Among the leaders declared elected on Thursday night, 13 leaders secured posts in the party’s highest decision-making committee for the first time. They are Shafiul Alam Chowdhury from Sylhet (organising secretary), reserved seat MP Waseqa Ayesha Khan (finance secretary), Saem Khan (deputy office secretary); and Mostofa Jalal Mohiuddin, AKM Jahangir, Akter Jahan, Dr Musfique, Hosney Ara Lutfa Dalia, Safura Khatun, Sanjida Khanam, Anisur Rahman, Shahabuddin Farazi and Gloria Jharna Sarkar (members).

Afzal Hossain, information and research secretary of the immediate past ALCWC, was promoted to organising secretary while Habibur Rahman Siraj and Aminul Islam Amin retained their posts of labour and manpower affairs secretary and deputy publicity affairs secretary respectively for a second straight term.

Besides, names of 40 members of the advisory council were also announced. They are: Dr SA Malek, Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Advocate Md Rahmat Ali, HT Imam, Dr Mashiur Rahman, Prof Dr Alauddin Ahmed, Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun, Barrister Shafique Ahmed, Syed Abu Nasar Advocate, Satish Chandra Roy, Prof Dr Abdul Khaleque, Prof Dr Ruhal Haque, Engineer Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, Advocate Syed Rezaur Rahman, Professor Dr Anupam Sen, Prof Dr Hamida Banu, Prof Dr Md Hossain Mansur, Prof Sultana Shafi, AFM Fakhrul Islam Munshi, Ambassador Mohammad Zamir, Golam Mowla Nakshabandi, Dr Mirza MA Jalil, Dr Pranab Kumar Barua, Maj Gen (retd) Abdul Hafiz Malik, Prof Dr Saidur Rahman Khan, Prof Dr Gowher Rizvi, Md Rashidul Alam, Architect Yeafesh Osman, Kazi Sirajul Islam, Makbul Hossain, Mozaffar Hossain Paltu, Adv. Abdul Baset Majumder, Mukul Bose, Salman F Rahman, Inam Ahmed Chowdhury, Ataur Rahman and Joynal Abedin Hazari.
