Agricultural minister Dr Abdur Razzak on Wednesday said that the people will witness an inspirational scenario in the country’s agriculture sector with its increasing trend of producing high-yielding varieties of crops and agro-products exports. Bangladesh earlier depended on the garment sector but now it is gradually depending on the agriculture sector, he added.

“Bangladesh has already been included in the developed countries’ criteria. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is curious to see the country depended on the agriculture sector,” he said speaking at a workshop titled ‘TCP projects on E-pest Surveillance and Fall Armyworm (FAW)’ held at the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council auditorium in the capital.

Farmers from different areas of the country are showing keen interest to bring about rewarding changes in the agro sector, the agriculture minister said. Razzak also said that Bangladesh is the most important area to be chosen for maize cultivation. Land of Bangladesh is the very fertile, requiring to intensify efforts to avail the fertility of the land to help prosper in the agriculture sector, he said.

The agricultural minister said, Bangladesh achieved Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target. Bangladesh, after fulfilling the demand for rice, is now exporting this important staple food to various countries of the world. “We hope the agriculture sector will be developed in a way that would benefit the farmers and help earn foreign exchange as well”, he added.

The agriculture minister also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is satisfied with the country’s agriculturists, and the government is also awarding those agriculturists who are coming up with successful innovations. If the farmers get government’s patronage and incentives, the country will soon be self-reliant in many agricultural products.

Besides, Bangladesh will be able to export a variety of agricultural products to foreign countries, the minister said. If the country’s present trend of producing high-yielding varieties of agricultural products continues, the lot of the cultivators’ will be changed, Razzak said.
