Actress Mahi collects AL nomination form for by-polls

Dhallywood film actress Mahiya Mahi, among 40 leaders of AL and its affiliated organisations, bought nomination form, for vying in the Chapainawabganj-2 seat of JS from the ruling Awami League.

Mahi procured the nomination form through the Awami League office in the capital's Dhanmondi area, for taking part in the bypoll.

Actress Mahiya Mahi's hometown is in the Chapainawabganj area. Recently, she began campaigning in the town, ahead of buying the nomination form for the election.

In this regard, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that the issue of actress Mahi's nomination form collection has been discussed with the party's president Sheikh Hasina.

Meanwhile, around 40 leaders of the ruling party collected nomination forms in the last two days. Of them, 31 forms were collected on the first day of the distribution of forms.  

The by-poll will be held in that seat on February 1.

It should be mentioned that the Election Commission announced five seats vacant after Md Zahidur Rahman of Thakurgaon-3, Md Mosharof Hosen of Bogura-4, Gulam Mohammad Siraj of Bogura-6, Md Aminul Islam of Chapainawabganj-2 and Abdus Sattar Bhuiyan of Brahmanbaria-2 tendered their resignations on December 11.

On the same day, Rumeen Farhana from women’s reserved seats also resigned from parliament.

Another BNP lawmaker, Md Harunur Rashid of Chapainawabganj-3, also resigned recently. But the schedule for the by-poll of that seat is yet to be announced.

The EC secretary said candidates can submit their nomination papers till January 5. Returning officers will scrutinise the nomination papers on January 8, and January 15 has been set as the last date for withdrawal of candidature.
