ACC to probe casino wealth

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is set to investigate the casino kingpins, extortionists and tender manipulators across the country. The investigation will be carried out to extract information about their source of income, an official of the ACC told Bangladesh Post on Tuesday. In the wake of the massive crackdown launched on casino kingpins, extortionists and tender manipulators across the country, the ACC on Monday held an emergency meeting to investigate their source of money.

Director General of ACC (Special Investigation) Saeed Mahbub Khan has been appointed as the supervising officer and Syed Iqbal Hossain, as the investigation officer. ACC Public Relations Officer (PRO) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya confirmed that the decision was made at an exigent meeting at the Anti-Corruption Commission chaired by ACC Chair, Iqbal Mahmood on Monday.

Ongoing operation of the law enforcers, the ACC's action has renewed concern over the misdeeds of mischief-makers and their godfathers. Sources said, ACC has started collecting data on casino business owners who own vast amounts of assets. The investigation team will soon ask for their property details as part of the inquiry.

At the same time, VIPs involved in the casino business recently, according to law enforcers, and their family members will also be asked for their wealth source valid details. The ACC will also seek income tax details, and passport information. In this regard, ACC Secretary Muhammad Dilwar Bakht said that the ACC has decided to launch a search against those who allegedly became owners of vast amounts of black money through illegal casinos.

A team has also been formed in this regard. Immediate legal action will be taken against them very soon, he added. Responding to a question, the ACC Secretary said that the Commission takes into account any information, related to corruption, in the media. The Commission will also decide on the matter. No top influencers will be exempted from the search. The ACC official said, the ministry would also take action against those ministries, which did not comply with the tender norms.
