ACC files plea seeking suspension of HC bail of UP chairman Selim

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a plea seeking suspension of the anticipatory bail granted by the High Court to the ‘controversial’ chairman of Chandpur, Selim Khan in a graft case that was filed for possessing assets beyond known source of income.

ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan said that the application was submitted to the relevant branch of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday (September 18).

On September 14, the High Court granted anticipatory bail to the controversial UP chairman for four weeks.

The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Biswajit Debnath in the order also asked the UP chairman to surrender before the trial court after four weeks.

On August 14, the higher court asked Selim Khan to surrender to the trial court within three weeks in a case filed over earning Tk 340 million illegal assets through unauthorised sand extraction.

Earlier on August 1, ACC’s assistant director Ataur Rahman filed the case against Selim Khan for acquiring the assets illegally.

According to the case statement, Selim Khan acquired assets worth Tk 34,53,81,119 beyond his known sources of income and he concealed information about his assets.

Later, on August 8, the Appellate Division ruled that Selim Khan must pay a huge amount in royalties against sand extraction from Meghna river.

In was reported that since 2016, Selim Khan, chairman of No. 10 Lakshmipur union parishad in Chandpur Sadar upazila; had been extracting sand from the Meghna River in Chandpur Sadar and Haimchar illegally, causing the government to incur a huge loss.

On September 20 in 2020, the ACC issued a notice to Salim Khan and his wife Shahanara Begum, asking for an account of their assets after finding preliminary evidence of acquiring illegal assets.

His total income was found to be Tk61.72 lakh, which came from his salary and allowance received as the chairman of the union parishad and from his loans.
