A total of 97 per cent of information was provided by the Information Commission Bangladesh in 2022 compared to the information requested.
Chief Information Commissioner Dr. Abdul Malek said this during a meeting with President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban in the capital on Sunday (September 24, 2023). He told the President that in 2022, the amount of payable information is about 97 per cent compared to the required information.
Led by the Chief Information Commissioner, a four-member delegation visited Bangabhaban to submit its ‘Annual Report 2022’ to the President. Information Commissioners Shahidul Alam Jhinuk and Masuda Bhatti and Secretary of the Information Commission Zubeda Nasreen were included in the delegation.
During the meeting, the Information Commission briefed the President on various aspects of the annual report and the overall activities of the commission
After the meeting, President’s Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin at a briefing said that President Mohammed Shahabuddin asked the Information Commission to take necessary measures for creating awareness at the grassroots level so that the people can know about the proper use and enforcement of the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
The President said that access to information is a basic human right. Besides, the free flow of information expands public welfare and curtails corruption.
He suggested the Information Commission to involve people at all levels, including, the administration and representatives of civil society members, to enhance the implementation of the RTI. “If the Right to Information Act is widely implemented, it will help reduce corruption in society,” he said.
During the meeting, President Shahabuddin was apprised by the chief information commissioner of the overall activities of the Information Commission, particularly in providing information to the public.
Secretary to President's Office Sampad Barua, President’s Military Secretary Major General SM SM Salahuddin Islam and other secretaries concerned were present during the meeting.
