The fisherman netted an about 8-kg ‘Chital’ fish from the Padma River at Sara union under Ishwardi upazila in Pabna. The fish was caught in the net of Liton Ali, a local fisherman of the area, on Saturday afternoon.

“Suddenly, I sensed something heavy in my net and finally caught the big fish weighed about 8-kg,” said Liton.

He that he never netted such a big sized Chital fish anytime in the past. The number of fish has decreased in the river for various reasons, including the rise of water level in the river. Big fishes are not available for several days. Suddenly this big fish was trapped at his net in Padma on Saturday, he added.

Later the fish was taken to Ishwardi market for sale.  A wholesaler buys the fish paying Tk 6,800. Liton Ali became happy to sell the fish at a good price.

Abdul Aziz, a wholesaler of Ishwardi Bazar, said that Liton Ali brought the fish for sale. “I bought that at a reasonable price from him. This made the poor fisherman very happy,” he said.

Ishwardi upazila’s Senior Fisheries Officer Shakila Jahan said that anyone can fish in the river without the Chital fish sanctuary.
