With a view to checking crimes and untoward situation during the forthcoming Dhaka City Corporation polls slated for February 1, a total of 64 judicial magistrates will discharge their duties from January 30 to February 3, 2020.

The Election Commission (EC) gave directives, asking the authorities concerned to take necessary steps for engaging relevant magistrates in this regard.

The elections will be held for a mayoral post, 75 councillor posts and 25 reserved seats (exclusively for women) in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and a mayoral post, 54 councillor posts and 18 reserved seats in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

Meanwhile, BNP nominated mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) election, Tabith Awal, came under attack while campaigning for polls in Dhaka’s Mirpur area Tuesday morning

Eye witnesses said that a group of people, equipped with sticks, suddenly attacked Tabith's election campaign in front of Parbat Cinema Hall. The attack followed a counter chase between the supporters.

Tabith's supporters alleged that miscreants also threw eggs on their campaign. Being informed, a police team went to the scene to take the situation under control.

Tabith alleged that the supports of Mujib Sarwar Masum, an Awami League-backed commissioner candidate from ward No 9, equipped with arms, rods and sticks attacked them from behind.

“They attacked us from behind like cowards. They launched the attack targeting me. This is a very dangerous matter that the attack was made in front of some police officers,” the BNP candidate observed.

He also said, the ruling party men carried out the attack as they have become unnerved seeing the mass wave created in favour of ‘Sheaf of Paddy’, the election symbol of BNP. “We didn’t launch a counter attack as we want to maintain peace.”

Dhaka city north Awami League nominee candidate Atiqul Islam said in reference to the attack on his main rival BNP candidate Tabith Awal, "It’s their inner conflict."
Atiqul Islam said this while speaking at an election rally held at the Beraid Muslim High School grounds in ward 42 of North City on Tuesday.
Tabit Awal was attacked while campaigning in the capital's Gabtali area in the morning. Around 20 to 30 BNP leaders and activists including Tabith were injured.
Atiqul Islam said, “I have not heard about the attack. They can stop the conflict themselves. We have always been talking about development.”
Referring to improving Beraid, Atiqul Islam said, "Canals will be recovered from here, and canals will be made better than Hatirjheel." The residents of this area do not have to go to Hatirjheel to see and enjoy.”
He remarked that the project worth over Tk 4 thousand crore for the development of new city areas is waiting for approval of the Prime Minister.
Today's rally was attended by Dhaka North Metropolitan Awami League President Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, General Secretary SA Mannan, Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan; Jahangir Alam, the 42nd ward councilor candidate, is the Awami League-backed reserved and Candidates of ward 14 (general ward 37,41,42) including Kamrun Nahar, Awami League, Jubo League, volunteer league and party leaders.
