557 shelters prepared in Pirojpur for cyclone Amphan

A total of 557 shelters have been set up in Pirojpur to deal with cyclone Amphan. District Disaster and Management Officer Md Mozaharul Islam said there are 300 shelters in 7 upazilas of the district. After placing locals in these shelters, if necessary, 257 more private shelters have also been prepared.

Of the 300 government shelters, 41 are in Nazirpur, 19 in Indurkani, 61 in Mathbaria, 11 in Kaukhali, 53 in Bhandaria, 29 in Nesharabad and 86 in Pirojpur Sadar. Later, local government primary schools and school, college and madrasa buildings will be used as shelters as required. He added that the decision was taken through a discussion held under the chairmanship of the deputy commissioner.

Deputy Commissioner Abu Ali Md Sajjad Hossain said that 557 shelters have been set up in 7 upazilas of the district. Work is underway to make all these shelters suitable for accommodation. Work is underway to procure food for the people living in the shelter with proper electricity connection, water supply and  sewerage.

District Superintendent of Police Md Hayatul Islam Khan said the OCs of each police station in the district have been directed to provide all possible assistance including security to the locals to deal with the cyclone. 

Awareness will be raised using microphone announcement at the initiative of the police after seeing the situation. Police have also been directed to provide security to the asylum seekers at the shelter.
