5 get life in Rajshahi

A Rajshahi court on Thursday convicted five persons and sente-nced them to suffer life in prison on charges of killing a man in the district over ten years back, reports BSS. 

Additional District and Sessions Judge Imdadul Haque found them guilty of the murder charge beyond any doubt and handed down the verdict in their presence in the court.

The convicts were identified as Ashraful Haque, 43, Israfil Hossain, 39, Mozammel Haque, 48, Mokbul Hossain, 37, and Mozaffar Ali, 36. They were also fined Taka 20,000 each, in default, to suffer one more year behind the bar.

All are the residents of Khodapur Birohi village under Bagmara Upazila in the district. According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that the accused persons killed their neighbour Golam Rabbani, 25, as a sequel to a previous enmity over a love-affair related trifling matter on the night of March 25 in 2009.

On the following morning, local people found his blood-stained body in a nearby betel leaf field. Khoda Baksha, father of the victim, had lodged a case with Baghmara Police Station on the same day. Upon completion of investigation police pressed charges accusing them on August 30 of the same year.

Additional Public Prosecutor Shariful Islam conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Aslam Sarker defended the accused persons during the trial period.
