Three alleged kidnapers identified as Rohingya men were killed in a gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of the district on Friday. The slain kidnappers were identified as Ukhia Rohingya camp residents Shamsul Alam, 35, and Nur Alam, 21, and Leda Camp resident Habib, 20, police sources said, reports BSS.
Teknaf Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das said a three-year-old girl was abducted several days ago while the kidnappers also demanded Taka five lakh as ransom from her family members. Police launched drives to rescue the girl after getting information from the girl’s family, the OC said. Pradip said the kidnappers released the girl on June 2 and police arrested the three Rohingya men on Thursday for their alleged involvement in the kidnapping. He said police took the suspects with them to an area behind the Leda Camp in Teknaf in the early hours of today to recover firearms. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, a number of criminals opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back that triggered a gunfight, the OC said. The three abductors sustained injuries during the gunfight while the others managed to flee the spot. The injured were rushed to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead, the police official said.
The bodies were sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy. The police officer said that they also recovered three light guns and eight cartridges.
