3.16 lakh bales of jute produced in Jamalpur

Farmers produced 3,16626 bale jute fiber in Jamalpur district this year. Reasonable price of jute fiber in local markets also makes farmers profitable.

Sources said per maund jute fiber was sold Tk 2500 to 3000 from the very beginning of harvesting.

Farmer Md Abdul Wadud at village Sapdhari in Islampur Upazila said he cultivated Tosha variety jute on three Bighas of land and got bumper yield due to short duration of flood, availability of fertilizer and co-operation of agriculture department.

He said he got 14 maund jute fiber from a Bigha of land and also got Tk 7000 by selling jute stick from a Bigha of land.

According to Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) office sources, farmers brought 28933 hectares of land under jute cultivation in the district this year. But recent flood damaged 2708 hectares of land.

The office said farmers got 20287 bales of local variety jute from 4140 hectares of land, 292266 bales Tosha variety from 23627 hectares, 554 bales of Mesta variety from 63 hectares and 3519 bales of Kenaf variety from 395 hectares of land.

DAE additional deputy director Mohammad Shakhawat Ikram said favourable weather, short time flood and proper nursing helped farmers get good yield of jute this year.
