21 including maxim finance chairman jailed in money laundering case

A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced Maxim Finance and Commerce Multipurpose Co-operative Chairman Muhammad Mofijul Haque and 20 others to 10 years imprisonment and fined them Taka 28.66 crore each in a money laundering case, reports BSS.

Judge Hoshne Ara of Dhaka Special Judge Court-1 pronounced the judgement on Tuesday.

The convicts are- chairman Muhammad Mofijul Haque, managing director Mohammad Habibur Rahman, directors Muhammad Habibur Rahman, Mostafizur Rahman, Khairul Bashar Sajal, Abdul Hannan Sarker, Syed Shariful Islam, HM Amirul Islam, Md Oliar Rahman, Fazlur Rahman, M Asaduzzaman Tapan, Mohammad Solaiman Sarwar, MA Sadi, Aslam Hossain, Mehedi Hasan Mojaffar, Harun Ur Rashid, Sheikh Abdullah Al Mehedi, Syed Jahidul Islam, Monwar Hossain, Imtiaj Hossain Kaiser and Mizanur Rahman.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on May 19, 2014, filed the case with Ramna Police Station.

The convicts collected more than Taka 304.10 crore from the 18 thousand clients through their 113 branches, though they had government approval for only 25 branches. They convicts laundered the money abroad, showing that was invested in other companies under Maxim Group.
