2,611 new cases, 32 deaths in a day

Bangladesh on Saturday registered 2,611 new cases of coronavirus, 32 deaths and 1,020 recoveries from the disease.

With the update of the last 24 hours till 8am, the number of total Covid-19 cases stood at 255,113, deaths 3,365 and recoveries rose to 146,604.

Prof Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General for Health, at the daily bulletin said 11,737 samples were tested during the period.

Of the dead patients, she said, 25 were men and seven were women.

Thirty-one of them have died in different hospitals and one at his residence.

Sixteen hailed from Dhaka, five from Khulna, four each from Chittagong and Rajshahi, two from Sylhet and one from Barishal division.

Bangladesh first reported the disease on March 8 and the first death on March 18. The WHO declared the disease pandemic on March 11.

According to the age group analysis of Covid-19 victims, the majority of patients, as of Thursday 46.98 percent, were aged sixty and above.

The age groups of 51-60 and 41-50 come next.

So far, 57.47 percent of patients recovered and 1.32 percent died.

Currently, 52,830 people are quarantined across the country – including 2,184 newly-quarantined individuals in the last 24 hours.

A total of 397,380 people have completed their quarantine course.

The country is capable of accommodating 31,991 people at 629 institutional quarantine facilities across the country, Prof Nasima said.

The authorities placed 864 new individuals suspected of having Covid-19 into isolation in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 19,025 after 37,014 left.

The additional director general also gave details of the hospital’s capacity at the bulletin, and said 15,248 general beds were prepared for the Covid-19 treatment. Of them, 4,044 are now occupied.

Besides, 233 ICU beds are available for the needs of Covid-19 patients.
