A total of 16 dengue patients in the last 4 days has admitted at hospital and 12 others with symptoms of dengue fever were also being treated at the Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College (SZMC) hospital on Friday, said SZMC Deputy Director Dr Musa Al Mansur.

Dengue patients have been kept under mosquito nets to prevent the spread of the disease, he added. The dengue situation has remained grim this year. The government said 9,256 people had been infected with dengue from January till Thursday. Nine of them have lost their lives.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that causes flu-like illness and occasionally develops into a potentially lethal complication called severe dengue. Dengue viruses are spread to people through the bite of infected Aedes species mosquitoes. There is no specific treatment for dengue or severe dengue, but early detection and access to proper medical care lowers fatality rates below 1 percent.
