126 shelter centres set up in Bandarban

The district administration have set up 126 shelter centres in risky areas of Bandarban district as heavy rainfall may trigger landslides, reports BSS.

“We are taking initiatives for shifting the people, who are living in risky hilly areas, to safer places. We have set up 126 shelters in risky areas for protecting the people from landslides and flood as Bandarban district has witnessed heavy rainfall,” Md Daudul Islam, deputy commissioner, told BSS on Sunday.

The deputy commissioner said due to heavy rainfall, there are possibilities of landslides and floods in the hilly district of Bandarban.

According to officials and representatives of local government bodies, water levels of Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers are in rising trend. Low-lying areas in Bandarban district will be flooded, if the rainfall continues, they added.

Due to active monsoon over Bangladesh, heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Barishal and Chattogram divisions during the next 24 hrs commencing from 10 am today, a Met Office weather bulletin said.

Due to heavy rainfall, landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chattogram division, it added.
