1,670 Natore families rehabilitated in the home of poor scheme

The government in its home for poor scheme has rehabilitated a total of 1,670 homeless families and widows of six upazilas of Natore, reports BSS. The homes were constructed at a cost of Taka one lakh each as part of the government plan to provide shelter to homeless people under Ashrayan Project-II.

Under the project 408 homeless families of Naldanga Upazila, 400 families of Natore Sadar Upazila, 293 families of Singra Upazila, 157 families of Boraigram Upazila, 130 families of Gurudaspur Upazila and 100 families of Bagatipara Upazila have been rehabilitated, officials said.

Every house has an area of 297 square feet tin-shed room with a verandah and toilet. A person having one to ten decimal lands but no home, poor families living in dilapidated house, poor freedom fighters, widows, abandoned women, physically challenged persons, baggers and age old people were rehabilitated in the project.

Zamila Begum, a widow Naldanga Upazila had no home of her own after demise of her husband 30 years back. Her only son runs a tea stall to live on. Zamila nd her son have got a home in the Ashrayan Project. Physically challenged Abdur Razzak of Brahamapur village and his wife had a small thatched house made of jute stick. During rainy season they needed to take shelter to neighbours’ house as rainwater poured in.

According to Shahina Begum, wife of a day labourer, they had no ability to make home at their own cost and not sure whether they would have the ability in future. “The home given by the government would be a safe shelter for me and my husband,” she said expressing gratitude to the government for arranging their accommodation.

Deputy Commissioner of Natore Md. Shahriaz told BSS that total number of homeless families is around 14,700. Every family would be rehabilitated in phases in future, he said.
