Election of the Dohar municipality has been stalled for last 18 years due to legal complexities although it is a first-class municipality of the county.
Despite paying taxes, the residents of the municipality are not getting the necessary benefits.
Moreover, since there is no elected mayor, the same person has been holding the post of municipality mayor for a long time.
Located on the bank of Padma River in Dhaka district, Dohar Municipality was formed with partial part of Joypara, Raipara, Sutarpara and Mahmudpur unions in 2000.
The maiden election was held on September 26 that year. Later, the election was announced in 2013 due to the political influence of the political leaders. Only three days before the election, the voting was halted.
The High Court halted the election following a writ petition filed by one Abdus Sobhan. He filed the writ petition with High Court over complexity of the municipality’s border. The complexity was created centering Mahmudpur area. Abdus Sobhan alleged that the part of Mahmudpur area that has fallen in the municipality while the people of the area are deprived of civil services.
HMA Wadud, a resident of the municipality, said that the election should be held overcoming the legal complexity. Mayor of the municipality A Rahim Mia said that some people filed a lawsuit with the court over the boundary of the municipal area. “When the court decides, I am ready to quit,” he said
