NATO leaders held an emergency meeting at their Brussels summit on Thursday after US President Donald Trump repeated demands that allies should immediately increase their defence spending, diplomatic sources told AFP.
During a meeting with Ukraine and Georgia, “Trump took advantage of his speaking time to return to the issue of burden sharing”, and alliance chief Jens Stoltenberg then convened the meeting, one of the diplomatic sources said on condition of anonymity.
Trump is on a seven-day, three-nation European trip- to Belgium, Britain and then Finland for talks with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia that highlights the ways he has utterly transformed US foreign policy.
