Nagorik Natya Sampradaya staged their 46th production of ‘Galileo’ after 20 years on Friday 5th October at the Bangladesh Mahila Samiti’s Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium. Tickets were sold in a rush and many were disappointed with not getting any. The audience was mesmerized by the performance and the actors too were overwhelmed with nostalgia.
The play was well received by the audience and the presence of veteran actors such as Cultural Minister Asaduzzaman Noor and Aly Zaker in the major roles made the play all the more appealing. The Mahila Samiti premise was filled with enthusiastic audience who only wanted a glimpse of their favorite actors. The cast also included fresh, new faces who also put in their hard work in the production.
Thirty years ago, ‘Galileo’ was staged in the country for the first time under the direction of noted playwright and actor Ataur Rahman. The staging of the play was put to a halt 20 years ago. This year, under the direction of Pantha Shahriar, ‘Galileo’ returned to the stage in a changed and different avatar.
Professor Abdus Selim has translated the play into Bangla based on ‘Life of Galileo’, a play by the twentieth-century German dramatist Bertolt Brecht with incidental music by Hanns Eisler. Executive Director of the production Sara Zaker, assisted by Nima Rahman, is in the costume design, while Nasirul Haq Khokon is behind the light direction. The next show of the play will be held on October 14 at the Experimental Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka.
