In order to improve our city life, a noticeable number of development projects have been taken by the government over the last decade. To serve commuters a smooth and hassle-free journey and transform Dhaka into a more liveable and sustainable city, the government and all the stakeholders are working earnestly to complete the construction of the metro rail within the stipulated time. Despite the obstacles faced, the authorities have managed to keep the momentum alive.
It is satisfying to note that, with a view to completing the metro rail works from Diabari to Agargaon by the end of next year, massive construction work is going on in different portions of the metro rail project area. The report tells us that the Japanese organisation is conducting quality works and the project authorities expect that the project will be completed before stipulated timeframe. Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is implementing the projects at a cost of TK 22,000 crore. We are told that MRT-6 project work will be completed by 2020. Workers are working round the clock so that the deadline is not missed.
Reportedly, the inauguration of the first metro rail of the country was scheduled for 2024, but through special arrangements it is expected to be inaugurated by December 2019. The first metro rail service from Uttara to Motijheel is expected to be opened to traffic by 2020. The first Uttara to Agargaon portion will be ready by June 2019 as construction work is going on in full speed. Earlier, JICA conducted a primary survey and feasibility study on the city’s 20-year-long Revised Strategic Transport (RSTP) project undertaken by the government.
After completing the mega projects, we hope that the city’s traffic jam will be reduced to a great extent and commuters will travel from one part to another within the shortest possible time. It will also transform Dhaka into a more active, commuter-friendly and sustainable city as it will be able to carry 60,000 passengers every hour.
We welcome the enthusiasm and efforts that have been shown and executed by the authorities concerned in order to connect entire Dhaka under metro-rail network. We hope relevant authorities including Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTC) will continue the momentum of their cooperative efforts to finish the construction of the projects before the stipulated time. We believe metro rail services will play the most effective role to reduce traffic congestion as well as air-pollution in Dhaka.
