The Matlab Bridge was opened to public on the first day of the year January 1, fulfilling the dreams of the residents of the northern Chandpur. Vehicular movement began on the bridge on the same day.
Chandpur Roads and Highways Department’s assistant engineer Md Jashimuddin on Tuesday confirmed the matter to Bangladesh Post.
According to Chandpur Roads and Highways Division, it will be able to collect tolls for two and a half years, effective from December 2018 to June 2021. The money will be deposited as state revenue every year.
In order to reduce the distance between Dhaka and Chandpur, Chandpur Roads and Highways Department undertook construction of the Matlab Bridge on the Meghna-Dhanagoda river on the east side of Matlab Bazar at the cost of Tk.84 crore in 2015-2016. Work began in 2015, and it was scheduled for opening on June 30, 2017.
According to sources, the construction work was completed in 2018. At present, work on the bridge crossing the northern side of Baishpur and the south-facing Baburhat-Matlab-Pannai road is delayed due to ongoing road work.
From Northern Chandpur, people would be able to go to Cumilla, Haimchar, Shahrasti, Faridganj, Ramganj, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Hajiganj and surrounding areas using the bridge. Moreover, the bridge will be easily accessible from the capital city within a short time.
The division had to acquire land for the construction of connecting roads and construction of the two-way bridge spending Tk 28 crore. RHD regularly monitors the project during construction.
A sub-engineer of Chandpur Sadar said, “The work on Matlob bridge is done, dramatically reducing time and distance to capital city Dhaka and facilitating transportation of fish, food grains and other agricultural products between the north and south of the district. Chandpur now have an excellent communication with Noakhali, Feni, Laxmipur will.”
The bridge will service more than 7 lakh people of Matlab North and South upazilas. Laxmipur, Noakhali and Madaripur will also be facilitated in the western side.
