Former Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka and three others were sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment for irregularities in the allotment of space at a mall.
Of them Khoka was also fined Tk 20 lakh while three others were fined Tk 10 lakh each.
The other accused are Abdul Baten, president of DCC super market in Banani; Mahmudul Hassan Azad, its general secretary; and AHM Tareque, manager of the market’s parking lot.
Judge Mizanur Rahman Khan, special judge for Dhaka division, passed the order on Wednesday in absence of the convicts.
All three are now on bail while Khoka, currently in London, was shown fugitive in the case.
On February 15, 2012, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station over misappropriation of funds.
The Dhaka City Corporation opened a bidding for leasing out the parking space of DCC Market in Banani in 2003. Among the bidders, Mizanur Rahman won the tender as the highest bidder, according to case details.
But Khoka in connivance with the three cancelled the bidding violating the DCC rules.
As a result, the DCC allegedly incurred losses amounting to about Tk 4 million from February 2003 to February 2011.
