BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman can no longer remain at the helm of BNP. They are losing the top positions per the court’s direction regarding amendment of the party constitution. The Election Commission (EC) has decided to give a letter to the party stating this, saying that there is nothing they can do about it. The letter will be given to BNP by today or tomorrow, referring to the fact that there is no chance of the EC going beyond the court’s direction. The Commission has already approved the document.
Upon enquiry, EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed stated that the decision was taken on the basis of the High Court verdict. BNP’s revised constitution will not be accepted. This matter will be informed to the writ petitioner, BNP and the court. As a result, the party’s previous constitution will have to continue.
Recently, a writ petition was filed regarding the amendment of the constitution of BNP. On October 31, the High Court bench of Justice Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Mohammad Ali ordered the EC not to accept the amended constitution.
The constitution of the party says that prisoners cannot hold office. Both Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman have been convicted in more than one case. Both have been sentenced to 17 years in two cases of corruption. Tarique Rahman also received a life imprisonment sentence for the grenade attack case of Aug 21, 2004 on an Awami League rally.
