Kankana Chakrabarty’s short film ‘Written By?’ is creating waves. Dealing with the burning issue of plagiarism, it has already won the filmmaker Best Director award at the 6th Siliguri International Documentary and Short Film Festival and the Best Actress award at the Mumbai Shorts International Film Festival. The shortie has all total bagged 10 awards in India and abroad.
The film has only two characters, a troubled screenwriter and director Kamalesh Roy played by Sabyasachi Chakraborty and his ambitious and optimistic intern Natasha Sen played by the director herself.
One night Natasha visits Kamalesh’s to wrap up the final edit of a film’s script but Kamalesh questions about Natasha’s punctuality. She tries to cool him down explaining the reason, the transport problem on a rainy night. What happens during this meeting regarding a script Natasha wrote based on Kamalesh’s life story forms the crux of the film.
“As a part of the industry, we often face trouble with copyright. We are really scared to share our stories with even our close ones. Everybody is busy claiming whether it’s their story or if someone stole it from them. It’s so sad. We all come here with our creativity, then why we often lack a conscience?” said Kankana Chakrabarty while speaking about his film.
