The 49th founding anniversary of Jahangirnagar University (JU), one of the leading educational institutions situated amidst the natural beauty in Savar, is being celebrated through various arrangements. On Saturday, 12 January, the programme was inaugurated at 10am by hoisting the national flag and the university flag on the campus premise of the Department of Business Studies.
JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Farzana Islam inaugurated the university day programme after which a joyous procession was led by her. The procession ended in front of the cafeteria after going around important places on the campus.
Later, at 11am, a cultural programme was organized by the University Student-Teacher Center at Muktomancho. After that a puppet show and MP Momtaz Begum’s solo performance was displayed.
JU was formally inaugurated on 12 January 1971 although classes actually began from 4 January. It is the only residential university of the country which has gained a reputation for its naturally beautiful campus and for being a safe bird sanctuary for the migratory birds.
In 1970, with the introduction of ‘Jahangirnagar Muslim University’ ordinance, JU started with 150 students with Economics, Geography, Mathematics and Statistics department. After independence, the name ‘Jahangirnagar University’ was given.
At present, about 15 thousand students are studying in 36 departments and three institutes under 6 faculties of the university. There are 16 residential halls which includes 8 for boys and 8 for girls.
